Readers in eighth-grade classrooms should have the skills to analyze how paragraphs are structured. Specifically, they need to be able to identify how sentence structure is used to present a concept in a reading. Likewise, readers are encouraged to learn how lines of dialogue in a literary piece help create the story of the character. Use the following activities to foster the growth of these particular abilities. Some of these activities will require additional content on top of the 8th-grade worksheets offered below.
To help students master the art of understanding sentence structure, make a game out of identifying parts of speech. Present a sentence to the reader and ask them to identify specific features, like subjects, predicates, clauses, and so forth. Points can be assigned for each correct answer, with a specific number of points garnering a prize.
A literature circle is a small group activity in which readers discuss specific passages of a literary piece. Students are asked to read the passage ahead of time and mark dialogue that they feel speaks the most to who the character is. Then, in their small group circles, students share their selected dialogue and explain why they think it is indicative of the character’s development.
This game is modeled after the well-known game show and asks students various questions about literary terms. Questions can cover a range of topics, from literary devices and parts of speech to story elements and figurative language.
